GPS Inflight
Friday, November 13, 2009, 12:50 AM
I have been trying to use my GPS on my phone to track some of my flights. I assume it would work without any issue. However on each occasion it would track fine on the ground, departure and then cut out untill the approach.

Confused I came across the quote below:

The biggest headache for GPS systems is the time it takes for the signal to get from the satellite to your receiver. The 6 satellites you get signals from will all be at different distances from you and are rotating the earth at high speed. So the signals your GPS receiver gets will not automatically be time synchronized. Because of this problem, the military has limited civilian GPS units so they don't work if they are moving faster than 900 knots or above 60,000 feet in altitude. But most non-aviation GPS units will give error messages if you are moving faster than 90 miles per hour. Clearly, if you are standing still, a GPS will be a lot more accurate.

This seems to make sense, as pretty soon after departure the speed would be around 90kts (104 mph).

Intresting, I wonder whether I can get around this or get the error plots?

ASUS M2N4-SLI & XFX 8600GT 512MB
Monday, August 18, 2008, 03:17 AM
Well my Mesh machine crashed earlier this week (it had been doing this recenetley) with a blue screen of death. On restarting I heard One Long beep followed by Two short beeps.

This means in BIOS POST terms that is a Video Card error. Annoyed I said well I have SLI config of two 7300GS's so I will take one out one by one and etc.. However no such luck so I decided to buy the XFX 8600GT but even then it did not work.

After thinking of buying a new pc, I decided to check the net where some people mentioned to check the ram. Hooray I found the socket one with the ram is either faulty or the ram is.

Once everything booted up I tested the new graphis card with FSX and was very impressed, no more stutters and settings could be turned up to 100% (yes 100%!!! :) )

Loving the XFX 8600GT 512mb and will be ordering some new ram. Also cleaned out the case of dust and the AMD Core is idle around 32C and under high load it reaches the high 40Cs which is perfect!

British Airways 777 Dubai Trip
Monday, February 11, 2008, 07:37 AM
I added two videos to youtube from my recent trip to Dubai.

Heathrow Landing:
Standard 27L approach taken from row 29 (behind the wing). Shows the spot where a BA 777 had crash landed and also note the car park before landing is where I usually lose ADS-B contact with aircraft from my location 12 miles away.

Dubai Takeoff:
Sorry for the baby crying loudly at the start but don't worry it soons stops. The takeoff from 12R which is newly built (only a month old) to handle A380 traffic and also the new terminal which is nearly ready.

Heathrow Landing

Dubai Takeoff

Both videos were taken from a Canon IXUS 5 Megapixel at 320 x 240 (QVGA). Next time with a new camera it will hopefully be 640 x 480
