Sky Broadband
Thursday, August 9, 2007, 03:33 PM
The migration date from f2s to Sky was the 6th August and it went through perfectly :)
Yup that's right, no nightmare stories so far. The f2s stopped syncing at about 11:30 and by 12 I had the sky router on and everything running fine. Speed is now 8mb and upload speed remains the same.
Had a slight issue with a older wireless usb (netgear wg111) with speed issues over wireless with skys netgear dg834g. However changed the usb with a newer one and all is perfect. Has to configure a few settings to get the server running but nothing complicated.
So far router has been connected for longer than 60hours and no drop outs and speed is quick. So thumbs up so far for Sky Broadband.

( 3 / 1321 )BBC iPlayer
Tuesday, July 31, 2007, 08:57 PM
After joining the beta I finally got my login id yesterday. Initial thoughts are disappointing:
1.) Download was slow, 1 hour for 100mb video of 30 minutes. (however seemed it took long to connect, once connected it was downloading at a good speed)
2.) Not all shows available. It looks like the BBC only has rights to certain programs and hence any films shown or American dramas like Heroes are not on the list.
However I have heard this may change. As it is a beta it still looking good in terms of the basic function of catching up with any BBC programs you missed.

Sunday, July 22, 2007, 09:29 PM
Well about 2 months left until work starts which is worrying. Time therefore to start brushing up (learning) some of the languages I might use and any other knowledge:
Java
Excel Marcos (Visual Basic)
C#
C++ (Panic!!)
Other than that Fsimzone is now being updated finally and just searching for a new idea for another site or application.

( 3 / 1190 )ADS-B Antenna and Mast Head Preamp Installed
Monday, July 16, 2007, 10:23 PM
Well the ELAD preamp certainly makes a difference is getting those weak signals. Getting double the amount of messages than before and nearly double the amount of aircraft.
No ground contacts at heathrow and the blank spots in my coverage have not got better in some areas. That means sooner or later its going to be external antenna time. Even though the 10 metre cable might not reach above the chimey I would be happy with having it close enough.
Running the reception plotter and will compare without the preamp. Already a record in distance which is now 196 miles.

( 3.1 / 1119 )ADS-B Antenna and Mast Head Preamp
Sunday, July 15, 2007, 10:26 PM
More testing on the RadarBox and tomorrow I should have my external antenna and mast head preamp.
Should be very interesting to see the difference. At present with my antenna on the wardrobe I get about 50-60 aircraft in peak periods and 50-60 messages per second.
In theory from other posts across the Internet I should see a 40-50% increase which would mean 100-120 messages per second and 120 aircraft at peak periods. If it does not go well I will need to move my antenna to the chimney stack however that's going to be unlikely.
Keeping fingers crossed for 100+ messages per second tomorrow and the magical Heathrow ground contacts.
